Alright, I just finished watching it, and...

DAMN IT! It was actually fairly watchable. I doubted I'd make it a minute in, I assumed it'd be god-awful unwatchable Flash garbage but I... liked the cuteness and the bright colors. And somehow the plot was tolerable. The Fluttershy scene actually made me smile.

I approached something cute and colorful with a frown entirely expecting to hate it and smiled in spite of myself by the end. When did I become a Care Bears villain?

In the last thread someone had a theory that the reason Celestia was so fantastically unconcerned about the prophecy despite presumably being the one to seal her sister in the first place was that she isn't the first Celestia. Even magical ponies don't live for one thousand years, and Celestia passed down her powers (and appearance) to her successors, while most of the ponies remained none the wiser.
So this sister Nightmare Moon wants to destroy actually died centuries ago, teaching us all an important lesson that opportunities (for revenge or reconciliation) can close through the passage of time.

WHen you get down to it, most of these fantasy based shows use fairly standard fantasy plots, especially since the characters being ponies is pretty much completely incidental.

Kinda like how the 'FRIENDSHIP HURR DURR' of these kinda shows is eerily like the so called boys' shows.

I've watched it 3 times now. Still love it.

The main pony's characterization was surprisingly good. When she was all "I don't need friends" I thought I knew EXACTLY the retardedly cliche'd direction that would go. You either just LOVE having friends or are actively anti-social and will suffer for it, eventually learning you're secretly lonely in denial. But instead, she didn't conform to either extreme and had perfectly adequate social capability, she just had things she'd rather be doing. And instead of learning some karmic lesson, in retrospect she was right for not prioritizing making friends. Though she probably couldn't have stopped Nightmare Moon anyway.

Usually when a show looks this bad it turns out to be bad, with pleasant surprises being stuff that just looked okay. But that this terrible looking Flash-style cartoon, based on My Little Pony no less, was even halfway decent was like smashing your hand with a hammer and finding it felt better for it. Usually the cute girl toy related shows are unwatchable, like to the point if I were in an empty room with a TV that would only play those shows, I'd keep the TV off.

Personally I'd assume the quality is simply due to finding the right people for the job and giving them space. I doubt the MLP property is so high-stakes the corporate oversight would be stifling.
