The nostalgia exploded within me when I heard the revamped My Little Pony theme at the start. Brought back some really old memories of my childhood. I didn't watch the original series, but my little sister did all the time. It didn't interest me, but if it was anything like it is now however, bet your ass I'd have watched it happily.

Gen 3 = the straight to DVD movies that came out over the last few years

The generations aren't based on the shows, they're from the toylines.

Generation 1 launched the show, around 1982. It was originally just the Earth ponies, but then you got Sea Ponies, Unicorn Ponies, Pegasus Ponies...

Generation 2 was 1997, the "Friendship Gardens" relaunch. It didn't do too well.

Generation 3 was 2003, and it's what you'll find for the most part in stores now. It's pretty close to the original look, but obviously with tweaks.

Generation 4 is the toyline that goes with this new show, and it's a HUGE change n how the toys look. A lot of people hate it, and I've got to say I'm one of them. The show looks great, don't get me wrong, but the toys look frickin' horrible.

Gen2 was ugly whore ponies that are hated by everyone.
Gen3 turned MLP back towards Gen1 appearances except a bit more Gen2-like slender anatomy. Gen3 is what most MLP toys in stores today are.
Gen4 is this new show and toys associated with it.

Different generations refer more to the toys than the cartoon series that were broadcast alongside with the toys. And I think Gen2 didn't have a cartoon? Not certain though.

Okay, G4 really doesn't make for good toys. It'll look great on merchandise, but there's a reason you don't see Powerpuff/Dexter's Lab/Foster's Home toys.
